Today is “Smoke and Mirrors” Day. I’d never heard of it. But I like the sound of it. Is it like “Fire and Reflection” Day? “Fog and Glass” Day? Nope, it’s a day devoted to trickery, deception and the art of fraudulent cunning. Got your attention now, don’t I?!
Have you ever wanted to just play havoc with someone or something? Well don’t, I really can’t recommend that (but if you do today’s the day!).
I’ve heard the term smoke and mirrors in legalese….sorry to all you lawyers out there! And possibly politicians use this as well?
But for us, let’s just all take some time today to perform a bit of magic…learn a new magic trick, make something disappear or do something nice and unexpected for someone today,
It sometimes seems like housing markets move whichever way the wind blows. When the weather’s cold, home sales tend to freeze. Prices fall and supplies of homes for sale increase. Buyers have been known to become more demanding.
It may be cold outside here in the Northeast, but that doesn’t mean your home won’t sell, you may just have to work a bit harder to make it happen.
There’s a lot about winter that’s fun. We have snow, sometimes lots of it, so why not turn it into an attraction. Do you have a fireplace or woodstove? Make sure it’s lit and warm for showings. Make your home smell inviting with hot cider spiced with cinnamon sticks simmering on the stove.
Always Always keep your driveway and walkways snow and ice free. If it’s a dark day or evening ~ and at this time of year that’s pretty much a given by 4:00pm ~ put the exterior lights on as well as your interior lights…you want to make having a home in the winter warm and cozy, not cold and dark!
Snow also brings wet and mud. If you don’t have a dedicated “mud room” try creating a mud nook by the front or back door. Put out an attractive mat for shoes and boots as well as baskets for mittens and gloves and a few hooks for coats. But don’t overload it, as always, keep clutter to a minimum!
These are the first impressions the buyer will have of your home….so make it count! And let the wind blow you into a sail! (get it? sale!)
It’s ~ National Christmas Caroling Day ~
I don’t think anyone knows who started this unique holiday, and while it’s not as popular today as it was a few decades ago, Christmas holiday caroling is still a great opportunity to get friends and neighbors together to enjoy the holiday and appreciate the meaning of the season.
Many groups, such as Scouts and youth groups often partake in this special musical event. Even family parties and business parties sometimes produce an impromptu caroling event. Caroling remains an important part of our cultural and social society.
I remember when my boys were younger and in cub/boy scouts, we would frequently go caroling to nursing homes and senior citizen centers. (Don’t forget to call ahead to the facility management to arrange a date and time!) And the bonus ~ a caroling event is often topped off with hot chocolate and cookies.
So I challenge you: buck the declining trend and organize a sing along ~ at home ~ at the office ~ out at lunch even! It may take a little planning to make your Christmas caroling happen, but in this day and age, you can get everything delivered to your front door, even a song!
Tis the season…. for craft fairs, that is! Actually, I’ve noticed that quite a few of them are being called “craft shows”, but no matter what you call them, nothing can beat a good gathering of local wares being sold just in time for the holiday gift giving season!
I mean, who doesn’t need another pair of hand knit mittens, a jar of home-made jam or jelly, or a few new Christmas decorations? And think about the gifts you could purchase to actually give away!! Not to mention the local camaraderie (and gossip!) you get from walking around the shows, talking to old friends and meeting some new friends
So on this Small Business Saturday, are a few fairs and/or shows that I know about this weekend:
